How the commentary settled it
Where the verse alone is ambiguous, the reading follows Vyāsa's commentary; the deciding lines are quoted below each decision.
The pronoun tad within tajja refers specifically to samādhi-born wisdom (samādhiprajñā), and tajja means ‘produced by that wisdom.’→ Produced by samādhi-born wisdom
ys [1]samādhiprajñāprabhavaḥ saṃskāro vyutthānasaṃskārāśayaṃ bādhate.
The latent impression produced by samādhi-wisdom suppresses the store of emergent-state latent impressions.
ys [4]tataḥ samādhijā prajñā, tataḥ prajñākṛtāḥ saṃskārā iti navo navaḥ saṃskārāśayo jāyate.
From that comes wisdom born of samādhi, and from that come latent impressions produced by wisdom; thus an ever-new store of latent impressions arises.
Saṃskāra is rendered as the technical ‘latent impression’: it forms a store that generates cognitions and is renewed through samādhi-wisdom.→ Latent impression
ys [2]vyutthānasaṃskārābhibhavāt tatprabhavāḥ pratyayā na bhavanti.
Because the emergent-state latent impressions are overpowered, the cognitions produced from them do not arise.
ys [4]tataḥ samādhijā prajñā, tataḥ prajñākṛtāḥ saṃskārā iti navo navaḥ saṃskārāśayo jāyate.
From that comes wisdom born of samādhi, and from that come latent impressions produced by wisdom; thus an ever-new store of latent impressions arises.
‘Other latent impressions’ is restricted by the commentary to the store of impressions belonging to the emergent or non-samādhic state (vyutthāna), rather than every saṃskāra without distinction.→ The latent impressions of the emergent state
ys [1]samādhiprajñāprabhavaḥ saṃskāro vyutthānasaṃskārāśayaṃ bādhate.
The latent impression produced by samādhi-wisdom suppresses the store of emergent-state latent impressions.
ys [2]vyutthānasaṃskārābhibhavāt tatprabhavāḥ pratyayā na bhavanti.
Because the emergent-state latent impressions are overpowered, the cognitions produced from them do not arise.
Pratibandhī has active force: the samādhi-wisdom-generated impression obstructs the other impressions; it is not itself obstructed.→ Actively obstructs other impressions
ys [1]samādhiprajñāprabhavaḥ saṃskāro vyutthānasaṃskārāśayaṃ bādhate.
The compound anyasaṃskārapratibandhin is construed with anya-saṃskāra as the semantic object of obstruction, corresponding to the commentary’s accusative vyutthānasaṃskārāśayam with bādhate.→ A tatpuruṣa whose prior member denotes the impressions obstructed
ys [1]samādhiprajñāprabhavaḥ saṃskāro vyutthānasaṃskārāśayaṃ bādhate.
The latent impression produced by samādhi-wisdom suppresses the store of emergent-state latent impressions.
